Medication FAQ

Can I send my daughter’s medication with her on Opening Day?

To ensure safety, consistency, and accuracy of medication administration, the ONLY medications we can accept on Opening Day are medications that have been blister packed by a licensed pharmacist and/or medications that are approved exceptions to this policy and are in their original pharmacy packaging. You have the option of using our local pharmacy, Whitley Drugs, or a pharmacy of your choice to package daily medications as required (see details on our Medication page or on the Pharmacy Form in your Greystone account). ALL medications arriving on Opening Day must be entered in the camper’s Health Form and accompanied by a Bring-From-Home Medication Form (available in the spring) through the Campanion app or through your Online Greystone Account.

What are the exceptions to the blister pack policy?

Medicines that do not have to be blister packed include liquids, injectables, ointments or creams, birth control pills, migraine medication that is only taken as needed, inhalers, and EpiPens. Essentially, any non-pill or capsule medications, or a prescription medication that is taken/used only as needed or in an emergency. Any of these can be brought to camp in the original pharmacy packaging and with the downloaded and completed Bring-From-Home Medication Form (available in the spring) through the Campanion app or through your Online Greystone Account.

I see that you recommend using Whitley Drugs. Why?

Whitley’s is a local pharmacy that has served the camp communities in our area since 1955. They will fill and package your daughter’s prescriptions several days before Opening Day, which will allow our nurses time to verify that the medications and instructions we receive match what you have entered online. We will reach out to you with any questions or concerns before your daughter arrives. Using Whitley’s also simplifies the process if a change, refill, or new prescription is needed while your daughter is at camp.

How does it work to use camp’s pharmacy, Whitley Drugs, to package my daughter’s daily medication?

  1. Register online at www.WhitleyDrugs.com and click the “Camps” button on their homepage.
  2. Have your daughter’s provider send prescriptions for any daily medication directly to Whitley’s, including any over-the-counter medications that she takes every day.

Your daughter’s medication will be packaged and waiting for her at camp when she arrives on Opening Day.

What should I do if I want to use my local pharmacy to package my daughter’s daily medication?

  1. Check with your local pharmacist to see if they can package your daughter’s prescription as required. There are detailed instructions for blister packing on the Pharmacy Form (in your Greystone Account) and also on our website. Allow time for your pharmacy to meet this requirement.
  2. Download the Bring-From-Home Medication Form (available in the spring) through the Campanion app or through your Online Greystone Account, and bring this completed form with your daughter’s pre-packaged medications on Opening Day.

What if my local pharmacy is willing to blister pack my camper’s medication, but they don’t have the camp-specific packaging as required?

Contact us, and we will arrange to send the appropriate blister packs to you for your pharmacy to use.

How do I find a pharmacy that is willing to blister pack my camper’s medication?

We have a list of pharmacies that will blister pack medications. If there is not a pharmacy listed in your city, search for locally-owned pharmacies in your town.

What about non-pill medications such as liquids, inhalers, or creams and lotions?

You may bring these in their original pharmacy packaging. Make sure these medicines have all been added to the Medication section of your camper’s Health History Form (in your Greystone Account). You must also download and complete the Bring-From-Home Medication Form (available in the spring) through the Campanion app or through your Online Greystone Account, and include it with these medications for Opening Day.

What if my daughter is on an ADD medication or another type of controlled medication?

Plan ahead! We suggest you speak with your pharmacist or the pharmacist at Whitley Drugs (www.WhitleyDrugs.com) about your particular medication and insurance situation. With planning, most ADD medications CAN be filled as required.

What about birth control pills?

Birth control pills are an exception to our blister pack policy due to the sequencing of the dosage. You can send birth control pills to camp on Opening Day as long as they are in the original packaging (with a pharmacy label) AND you have downloaded and completed the Bring-From-Home Medication Form (available in the spring) through the Campanion app or through your Online Greystone Account.

My daughter will need allergy (or growth hormone) injections at Camp. Can I bring this medication on Opening Day?

Yes. You can bring injectable medications on Opening Day. Please make sure you have listed the medication on her Health Form (in your Greystone Account). Then, download and complete the Bring-From-Home Medication Form (available in the spring) through the Campanion app or through your Online Greystone Account. These medications need to be clearly labeled and accompanied by a physician’s orders for administration.

A note about allergy injections: We can continue a maintenance dose at camp, but we cannot titrate up (increase dosages). Please call us if you have questions or concerns.

My daughter has an EpiPen due to an allergy. Can she bring it to Camp on Opening Day?

We have EpiPens strategically placed throughout Camp and available for any out-of-camp trips such as Hiking or Thunderhead Riding. We recommend that you leave your child’s EpiPen at home unless she needs to keep it on her person at all times. If you choose to send an EpiPen for her to keep with her, you need to include this in the Medication section of her Health History Form (in your Greystone Account) and download and complete the Bring-From-Home Medication Form (available in the spring) through the Campanion app or through your Online Greystone Account. The nurses will collect this form on Opening Day.

My daughter has a rescue inhaler for asthma. Can she bring it to Camp on Opening Day?

If your daughter needs to keep her rescue inhaler with her at all times or you think it is likely she will need to use it at camp, you can send it with her. Make sure you download and complete the Bring-From-Home Medication Form (available in the spring) through the Campanion app or through your Online Greystone Account, and include it in a Ziploc bag with the inhaler. The nurses will review this form on Opening Day. Please send a spacer if she uses one as well. If you think it is unlikely she will need it, we recommend leaving it at home. We can provide a rescue inhaler if she does end up needing one.

Can I bring my daughter’s “as needed” medications on Opening Day?

The only “as needed” medications that can be accepted on Opening Day are prescription medicines like a migraine medication, a rescue inhaler, or an EpiPen (if your daughter needs to keep it with her at all times). Our Health Hut is well stocked with over-the-counter medications for a variety of complaints and conditions. We can administer these to your daughter anytime she needs something at no charge to you. If our Health Staff feels that she needs to take one of these medications every day, we will contact you. Our camp physician will prescribe the medication for daily use, and our pharmacy will blister pack the medication as required. If you have any questions or concerns about a particular “as needed” medication, please contact us.

Can I bring my daughter’s vitamins or supplements to camp?

Vitamins and supplements are considered medications at camp. If your daughter needs to take vitamins or supplements while she is at camp, you will need to have those prescribed by her physician and filled and packaged by a licensed pharmacist into our required blister packs. You cannot bring any vitamins or supplements to camp that have not been prescribed and blister packed as required.

Can I send melatonin to camp?

Melatonin is considered a medication at camp. If you want your daughter to take melatonin every night before bed, you will need to have it prescribed by your physician and filled by a pharmacist into our camp-specific blister packs. If your daughter will only take it occasionally as needed, she can come to the Health Hut and ask for it; we have melatonin in stock.

My daughter was placed on an antibiotic (or other new medication) in the week before Opening Day. Can I bring it to camp?

Yes. Please contact us and let us know to expect this new medication, and then send it in the original container with the pharmacy label. Please download and complete the Bring-From-Home Medication Form (available in the spring) through the Campanion app or through your Online Greystone Account, and include this with any other instructions in a Ziploc bag with the medication.

How will my daughter’s remaining medication be returned at the end of Camp?

Any remaining medication will be delivered to your camper and packed in her belongings prior to you picking her up on Closing Day. Anything requiring refrigeration will be kept at the Health Hut for you to pick up on Closing Day.

What if I still have questions about how this policy works with my daughter’s specific medication?

We suggest you talk with the pharmacist at Whitley Drugs (www.WhitleyDrugs.com) or your local pharmacist. If you still have questions, please contact us, and we would be happy to help you make a plan for your daughter’s medication.
